Pay a visit to Chankaska Creek Winery

KASOTA, Minn. — Chankaska Creek Ranch and Winery is nestled in a property that used to contain a popular restaurant as well as an 1800s homestead.

Owners Kent Schwickert and Jane Schwickert __have found yet a new use for the land as a vineyard and event space. Despite the new function, they kept the name Chankaska Creek to honor the property's rich heritage.

Chankaska Creek Winery and Ranch is situated on 25 acres near Kasota. Ten acres are used for growing grapes. They __have 10 varietals of grapes. It takes three years before a new variety can be harvested.

"It's a business where you have to have a lot of patience; it's not a get-rich-quick scheme," said Jane Schwickert, Chankaska Creek Ranch and Winery general manager. "To grow anything in Minnesota is a challenge."

The vineyard crop was hit hard by frost this spring. The frost damaged 20 percent to 30 percent of the crop. Schwickert said they used smudge pots and cold water drains.

"Right now everything is looking amazing," she said. "We feel very fortunate that we didn't receive a lot of damage, as many vineyards did."

Half the varieties of wine at the Chankaska Creek Winery are made from Minnesota grapes. Chankaska Creek is unique because they use grapes grown on the property, from area growers, as well as growers from the West Coast. This expands their options on the menu, and helps them to support local farmers.

"We have the ability to serve chardonnay, cabernet and merlot along with our cold hearty varietals," she said.

Established in 2008, Chankaska Creek's tasting room serves meat and cheese platters and boasts a wood-fired oven for baking pizzas. Tasting room visitors can sample a variety of wines. Tastings cost $7 and include one-ounce pours of five types of wine. All of these can be enjoyed from the outdoor deck and patio.

Also, they offer subscription services that involve shipping wine to customers quarterly.

But it's not just wine that's being served at Chankaska Creek. Guests can sample distilled spirits as well. This is a new side to their business that began in May of this year. Schwickert notes that distilling will allow them to utilize Minnesota fruits, create infused wines and partner with area businesses for distilling, such as the Mankato Brewery. Right now, they offer a variety of spirits from gin to apple brandy to whiskey, with more to come.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the grounds. The property is host to original artwork throughout. Brochures are available to read about the art pieces and artists. The artwork is provided in partnership with Parley Lake Winery, located in the West Metro.

Chankaska Creek Winery is a popular wedding destination. Also, they host events and classes. Uncorked is a popular event. It's held every September and brings in bands and involves food and wine. Toast to Women includes a style show and happens either during the hunting or fishing opener each year. In addition, every Friday and Saturday guests can enjoy free live music.
