A status yellow rainfall warning has been issued by Met Eireann for parts of the country today until 12 o clock tonight.
In total, 25-35mm of rain is expected to fall with further accumulations expected for Tuesday, while tonight will continue to be wet in western coastal counties with some heavy falls of rain possibly leading to localised flooding.
There is a mixture of scattered showers and clear spells forecast for this week, according to Met Eireann, with fog affecting some areas early in the mornings.
Today, Monday, will see outbreaks of rain in the west will become persistent and heavy. Elsewhere it will be mainly dry with a few bright or sunny spells.
However, it will be a blustery day with strong and gusty southeasterly winds expected. Temperatures are set to reach highs of between 15 to 17 degrees.
Overnight it is forecast to remain mostly dry and mild with lowest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees.
Tomorrow
Tomorrow, Tuesday, will see further outbreaks of rain affecting western and southwestern coastal counties for a time with the continuing risk of localised flooding.
The rain will become lighter and patchier later in the day. Elsewhere it will be a rather cloudy day with a few spots of rain and some mist patches possible near the east coast, according to the forecast.
Meanwhile, highs of 16 degrees are expected in a moderate southeasterly breeze which will ease as the day goes on.
Outlook
It is forecast to be mostly dry with bright or sunny spells on Wednesday, after morning mist and fog clears.
Temperatures could reach highs of 17 degrees on Wednesday, as the south and southeast is set to be affected by patchy mist or drizzle.
Thursday and Friday is forecast to be bright at times, but there is a risk of some rain especially near southern and eastern coasts.
Early indications for Saturday and Sunday suggest some showery rain at times over the weekend, mainly in the west and northwest on Saturday.
But overall amounts will be reasonably small and there will be a good deal of dry weather about with some sunny breaks in places, according to Met Eireann.
Drying conditions are expected to improve later in the week following the showers forecast for Monday and Tuesday, while spraying conditions will be poor due to the blustery conditions.
The rain forecast for early in the week will mean field conditions remain poor with leave soils saturated or waterlogged, especially in the west.

Due to the heavy rain that was promised today, accumulations of over 30mm are likely on higher ground.
The rainfall warning is in place until midnight tonight.
Early tonight, Met Eireann has forecast that rain will clear eastwards and moderate southwesterly winds will fall light with some mist or fog patches forming.
Lowest temperatures will fall to around 2 to 4 degrees.
However, rain is forecast to linger along the southeast and south coasts and return by morning with lowest temperatures there staying around 4 to 6 degrees.
Further heavy rain is promised on Saturday, with the rain spreading northwards in the morning and continuing through the afternoon and evening.
Meanwhile, temperatures in the afternoon will range between 8 or 9 degrees and winds light and variable in direction.
On Sunday, many places will be dry early in the morning but Met Eireann has promised further outbreaks of rain during the afternoon and evening while temperatures remain largely unchanged.
Next week will start off with a bright day on Monday with good sunshine, however heavy showers are forecast to develop countrywide in the afternoon.
Current indications suggest that Tuesday will be the driest day of next week with sunny spells and just a few showers.
