The British Wildlife Photography Awards 2015 competition is now open for entries, offering you a chance to win a prestigious award, a cash prize of £5,000 and reach millions through national exposure. The competition will also help to raise awareness about British wildlife and celebrate our natural heritage.
The awards recognise the talents of both amateur and professional photographers and videographers in Britain while also celebrating the wealth and diversity of British wildlife – as shown by the beautiful images here, from last year’s competition.
Winners and commended entrants will have their work showcased in a touring exhibition and book, and will be invited to an exclusive awards ceremony in London in September 2015. The overall prize fund, worth up to £20,000, includes prizes from lead sponsors Sky and Canon.

Competition categories
The competition has 16 categories including animal behaviour, urban wildlife, habitat, animal portraits, marine life, and the hidden secret world that lies in the undergrowth. There are also two junior categories and a school award – to encourage young people to connect with nature through photography. In addition to still photography there is an opportunity to capture wildlife in action and win a special award for wildlife in HD video. Be inspired by the video winner and commended entries in 2014 before creating your own entry.
The Young People’s Awards WildPix/BWPA, sponsored by RSPB Wildlife Explorers, is split into two age groups: up to 11 years old and 12 to 18 years old, and entry for these groups is free.
Chris Packham, naturalist and TV presenter, said: “Each year the British Wildlife Photography Awards generates an incredible catalogue of splendid, exciting, imaginative and artistic images, proving beyond doubt that we have the richest palette of life to celebrate in our own backyard. Anyone passionate about protecting and preserving wildlife will be inspired by the British Wildlife Photography Awards, which in its sixth year has done more than any other award to raise the profile of British wildlife.

Last year’s overall winning shot, and winner of the Urban category, Urban Tourist (Graylag Goose), pictured above, was taken by Lee Acaster from Suffolk. Lee said: “I ended up being just a few inches away from him for the final image. He was still happily stood on the wall as I left, probably wondering what on earth the strange man with the flashing light had been doing.”
The competition is open until 2 May 2015 and all winners, commended entrants and photographers who feature in the book will be invited to an awards ceremony and launch of the traveling exhibition which will take place at the prestigious Mall Galleries, in London, during September 2015. www.mallgalleries.org.uk
